The diverse program presents shorts, features, youth documentaries and digital stories. Opening night features Beyond our Shores a showcase of award-winning films which affirm the importance of story telling. We have looked beyond our shores to put this program together, collecting stories that show courage and strength, suspense and truth. Also included are youth documentaries and digital stories, which are made through the Festival’s filmmaking program. The Youth Documentary Program involves the creation of short documentaries as well as digital stories. These works are personal and reflective, and affirm the importance of understanding individual perspectives in our culture. The award winning Youth Documentary Project (YDP) seeks to engage young adults in positive modes of self-expression and creative investigation through the creation of short documentaries. In 2009, professional filmmakers worked alongside media teachers to deliver a series of film production workshops to year 9 and 10 students over a three-month period. The students worked in small crews to create short documentaries on a topic of their choice. The completed films are shown throughout the Bayside Film Festival on 15 – 18 July 2009. It is intended that screening and awarding of youth documentaries will be an ongoing aspect of future Bayside Film Festivals. In time it is hoped that the program will be extended to include more secondary school students beyond the municipality, so that participants are able to vie for selection into future Bayside Film Festivals and compete for the top prizes.
